Your Spine Is a Garden: Meet the Seven Garden Gateways 🌿
By Sara Taylor · September 21, 2026
Your spine is so much more than a stack of bones.
Most of us think of it as scaffolding, the thing that keeps us upright. But your spine also houses and protects your nervous system, the vast network of nerves that connects to every organ in your body. It carries physical information, and it carries emotional information too. It's one of the places where your body holds what you've lived through.
When I began my own restoration journey after grief turned my world upside down, I learned that I couldn't think my way back to feeling safe. My body had to lead the way. And again and again, it led me back to my spine.
A Garden Along Your Back
In my work, I think of the spine as a living garden with seven regions, rooted at the tailbone and rising all the way up to the crown of the head. I call these regions the Seven Garden Gateways. Each one is a place where we can gently access the nervous system and invite it back toward safety.
Here's a walk through the garden, from the roots up.
🌱 Loam, Belonging (Coccyx) Loam is the rich soil everything grows from. This gateway at the tailbone is connected to survival, stability, and a sense of belonging. It relates to the pelvic floor, bowel and bladder function, and the nerves that support your legs and feet. When Loam feels safe, you feel like you have ground to stand on.
🌰 Seed, Becoming (Sacrum) Seed holds potential. This region is tied to creativity, sensuality, and emotional flow, and it relates to hormones, the pelvic floor, the hips, and the reproductive system. It's where new parts of you begin to take shape.
🌳 Trunk, Standing (Lumbar, lower back) Trunk is your strength and steadiness. This gateway is linked to personal power, boundaries, and motivation, and to digestion, metabolism, and the body's stress response. Many of us carry the weight of "holding it all together" right here.
🍃 Canopy, Sheltering (Thoracic, mid and upper back) Canopy offers shelter. This region surrounds the heart and lungs and is associated with connection, compassion, and emotional balance. It relates to your breath, heart rate variability, and immune function. When Canopy softens, it becomes easier to let others in.
🌿 Branch, Speaking (Lower neck) Branches reach outward. This gateway relates to the throat, vocal cords, thyroid, neck, and shoulders, and it's connected to communication and self expression. It's also connected to the vagus nerve, a key player in how your body shifts into rest. If you've ever swallowed your words, you may feel it here.
🌷 Bud, Sensing (Upper neck) Bud is where awareness gathers before it blooms. This region is linked to the brainstem, eyes, ears, and upper face, and it supports sensory processing, intuition, and perception. It plays a role in alertness, attention, and your sleep and wake cycles.
🪷 Blossom, Opening (Crown) Blossom is the flowering. At the top of the spine, this gateway is associated with higher thinking, spiritual connection, and a sense of unity. It relates to your circadian rhythm and the way your whole nervous system comes together as one.
Why This Matters
When your spine feels safe, your whole system can soften, process, and move through life with more capacity. Stress doesn't only live in our thoughts. It lives in tight shoulders, a clenched low back, a jaw that never quite relaxes. Tending to these gateways is a way of telling your body, "You're safe now. You can put some of this down."
This is the heart of the work I do through NEST sessions and my six-week Rooted Resilience Method: gently mapping where your body holds tension and patiently restoring a felt sense of safety, one gateway at a time.
Try This: A One Minute Garden Walk
- Sit or stand comfortably and let your feet feel the ground.
- Bring your attention to your tailbone. Imagine roots reaching down into rich, warm soil.
- Slowly move your awareness up your spine, pausing at your low back, your mid back, your neck, and the crown of your head.
- Notice where you feel open and where you feel tight. There's no need to fix anything. Just notice.
- Take one slow breath into the place that asked for the most attention.
That place may be the gateway that's calling to you today.
